1. Compatible Garmin Devices
The Final Surge Garmin IQ app currently works on the following devices:

  • Forerunner Series - 245, 245 Music, 645, 645 Music, 735XT, 935, 945
  • Fenix Series - 5, 5S, 5S Plus, 5X, 5X Plus, Chronos
  • MARQ Series - MARQ Athlete
  • Edge Series - 520, 520 Plus, 530, 820, 830, 1000, 1030, 1030 Bontrager
(will not work with Edge Explore Series as they do not support structured workouts)
Why is the Forerunner 230/235 not supported?
The Final Surge Connect IQ™ app is built using the Connect IQ™ 2.0 platform. The Forerunner 230/235 only supports Connect IQ™ 1.0. Unfortunately, this version of Connect IQ™ does not support most of the features that the Final Surge Connect IQ™ app must use to deliver workouts to our athletes. Although the 230/235 are some of Garmin's most popular watches, they are not compatible with their newer versions of Connect IQ™.

Downloading Workouts to the Forerunner 230/235
Although the Final Surge Connect IQ™ app is not compatible with the Forerunner 230/235, you can still download and use workouts from Final Surge on your device. You will need to use the manual file download option through the Final Surge web platform, and then place the files on your device in the WORKOUTS folder (you must plug your device into a computer via USB). Click here for complete instructions using this method: Manual downloading of Final Surge FIT files.

2. Installing the Final Surge Connect IQ™ App

  • To install the Final Surge app on your Garmin device, first make sure your Garmin is connected to your phone via bluetooth and you have the Garmin Connect app up and running on your phone. From the main menu in the Garmin Connect app, click on Connect IQ™ Store.
  • Search for "Final Surge" in the Connect IQ™ store in the search bar at the top. Once the Final Surge app appears in the results, tap on it to go to the details page. On the details page, click the blue "Download" button.
  • The Final Surge app will be downloaded to your Garmin Connect account. The next time you sync your Garmin device with the Garmin Connect app on your phone, the Final Surge app will be installed on your watch or cycling computer.
  • Once the app is installed on your Garmin device, open the app by clicking the Start button on your device, and then scrolling down the list of activities (Run, Bike, Swim, etc.) until you see Final Surge. Once selected, click the Start button to open the app.

First Use: Authenticating your Final Surge Account
Once the app is installed on your Garmin device, the first time you use it you must authenticate your Final Surge account to the app. To do this, open up the Garmin Connect app on your phone and ensure your Garmin device is connected to your phone via Bluetooth. Then, from the main menu of the Final Surge Connect IQ™ app, select Load New Workouts. This will prompt you to open the Garmin Connect app on your phone which will then display a Final Surge login screen. Login on this screen and authenticate the connection to the app. Once you have completed this step, Final Surge will then be able to send workouts down to your Garmin device.

3. Overview of the App & How it Works
Launch the Final Surge Connect IQ™ app from your device. If you have a Forerunner, do this by clicking the Start button on your watch, and then scrolling down the workout menu until you see Final Surge. Click Start again to launch the app. Once you launch the app, you will see the following options from the main menu:

  • Today's Workout

Select this option to view and start any planned workouts for today. If you have not yet downloaded today's workouts from Final Surge, the app will prompt you to download them. You must have the Garmin Connect app on your phone launched and connected to your watch via Bluetooth in order to download today's workouts.

Once the app sees that workouts have been downloaded and are available for today, it will then list out the names of each workout. Click on the workout name. The screen will then show "Select start to launch or go back to cancel". If you would like to continue with that workout, click Start. You can then choose to either start the workout or you can view the steps of the workout from this menu.

  • Select Workout

If you have downloaded several days of upcoming workouts using the Load New Workouts feature, or, if you'd like to view or start past workouts, use this menu to browse all of the Final Surge workouts that are on your watch. Click on the name of a workout and you will see "Select start to launch or go back to cancel". If you would like to continue with that workout, click Start. You can then choose to either start the workout or you can view the steps of the workout from this menu.

  • Load New Workouts

This feature allows you to download several days of future workouts to your Garmin device. If you don't want to have to download today's workout every day, or, if you won't have internet connection for a few days, you can download up to 5 days of future workouts. You can configure how many days of future workouts to download by going to Settings --> Num of Days to Download from the main menu of our app. Once you click Load New Workouts, future workouts will be downloaded to your watch based on your Settings (this defaults to 3 days of future workouts).

Error Messages

1. Not enough storage
Garmin watches and cycling computers only allow you to store up to 20 planned workouts on your device at one time. Unfortunately, there is no way for the Final Surge Connect IQ™ app to remove old workouts automatically for you. Garmin does not allow this with Connect IQ™ 2.0. When the Final Surge Connect IQ™ app sees there are 20 workouts on your device, or that there will be more than 20 once you download the newly available workouts, you will not be able to download additional workouts until you delete some of your past planned workouts. The only way to do this is manually deleting workouts from the device yourself. You can do this one of 3 ways:

  • Plugging your device into your computer via USB cable
  • Deleting workouts using the menus on your device
  • Using the Garmin Connect app on your phone (not available for workouts downloaded through the Final Surge app)
Read below for detailed instructions regarding each method:

Plugging your device into your computer via USB cable:
Plug your Garmin device into your PC or Mac so that you can browse the device as USB storage and view the folders. Open up the folder named GARMIN. Inside of the GARMIN folder, scroll down and find the folder called WORKOUTS. Open up this folder and inside is all of your planned workout files. These FIT files will have an 8 character name of numbers and upper-case letters (example: 8B5A3003.FIT). Use the Date Modified column to know which workouts are older and which ones are newer. Delete these files to clear up space on your device so that you can download additional workouts from Final Surge.

Deleting workouts using the menus on your device
Each device slightly varies on how to delete workouts from it. If using a Garmin Forerunner, click the "Start" button and then select an activity type (Run, Bike, Swim, etc.). Once you have select an activity type, hold down the menu button for a few seconds (watch button with 3 horizontal bars icon on it). You will then be presented with settings menu. Scroll down and select "Training". Under Training, select "My Workouts". You can then select a specific workout. Any workouts you see starting with "fs_" are workouts you have downloaded from Final Surge. Once selected, scroll down on this menu page until you see "Delete". Select that option to remove the workout from your device.

To delete workouts from your Garmin Edge device, follow these instructions:
  • Select Menu > Training > Workouts > Delete.
  • Select one or more workouts.
  • Select Delete Workouts > OK.

Using the Garmin Connect app on your phone
This method allows you to delete workouts from your device that was created using Garmin Connect only. Garmin does now allow you to delete workouts created from Final Surge or other 3rd parties using this method. To delete a workout through the Garmin Connect app, open up the app and click the main menu icon in the upper left-hand corner of the app. From this menu, select "Training". There are two tabs at the top of the Training page: Training Plans and Workouts. Click on Workouts. You can then click on a specific workout from the list to view the details. In the upper-right hand corner of the screen you will see three vertical dots. Tap that and then select the "Delete Workout" option and this will remove the workout from your device the next time you sync your phone with your device.

2. Today's workout not loaded

This error will display if you have selected Today's Workout from the main menu, but there are no workouts downloaded to your device that match today's date. Make sure you have a structured workout associated with your planned workout for today on your Final Surge calendar (see video tutorial below), and then try selecting Load New Workouts in the app. This will attempt to download your workouts from Final Surge to your Garmin device. Once you have downloaded workouts, go back to Today's Workout to select your workout for today.
